I am very pleased to announce that Rebecca Hort-Atkinson, MBPsS

of The School of Natural Sciences & Psychology at Liverpool John Moores University, UK has approached the Adenomyosis Advice Association and asked whether any of our UK based association members would be interested in taking part in some research.

Liverpool John Moores University are currently recruiting participants to take part in a research study looking at the effectiveness of a mindfulness-based intervention in preventing the development of persistent post-surgical pain (PPSP) following hysterectomy surgery. PPSP is an adverse consequence of some routine surgical procedures affecting up to 50% of individuals. Following hysterectomy, acute pain is to be expected but some women may develop pain which lasts much longer than the expected recovery period for their surgery.

The purpose of this research is to target pre-surgical anxiety using mindfulness-based techniques, in order to potentially reduce the likelihood of PPSP developing. A large body of research shows that mindfulness techniques are effective in reducing acute and chronic pain, as well as in helping individuals manage conditions such as depression and generalised anxiety disorder; however, the effectiveness of these techniques in relation to the development of PPSP has not yet been tested.
